Teboho Mokoena, a pivotal figure in Bafana Bafana’s triumphant campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has become the subject of intense interest from foreign clubs. However, Mamelodi Sundowns, his current club, appears resolute in retaining one of their standout players during the upcoming transfer window.
Despite burgeoning speculation surrounding his future, negotiations for a contract extension with Teboho Mokoena have hit an impasse at Mamelodi Sundowns.
Reports from the local press unanimously suggest that the 27-year-old midfielder could be lured away by foreign suitors, a scenario that complicates discussions regarding his contract renewal.
However, the reigning South African champions are unwavering in their stance. In response to inquiries from SABC Sport regarding Mokoena’s contractual status, Sundowns officials have categorically stated that there will be no departure this summer while the player remains under contract.
“**As a matter of principle, Sundowns FC never comments on player contract negotiations and considers this to be an internal matter.
The MSFC, however, clarified that Teboho Mokoena has two more seasons [with the club] after the current season,”** asserted representatives of the Downs.
While Mokoena is expected to honor the remaining two years of his contract with professionalism, uncertainties loom over whether Mamelodi Sundowns will maintain their stance if the player is determined to leave or if lucrative offers are tabled.
In the meantime, Mokoena, who has been sidelined due to injury, is undergoing rehabilitation and is poised to make a return towards the end of the season, provided his recovery progresses as expected.
With Sundowns already clinching the Premiership title for the seventh consecutive time, there is no immediate pressure for his return.
This season, Mokoena has showcased his prowess with 5 goals and 3 assists in 34 appearances for the Brazilians.
