Mamelodi Sundowns determined to beat Remo Stars for first win in Nigeria - Thapelo Moren

Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thapelo Morena says the team is fully focused and determined to break their winless run on Nigerian soil when they take on Remo Stars in the CAF Champions League on Sunday.

The South African giants have historically struggled in Nigeria, having suffered defeats to Julius Berger in 2001, Enyimba FC in the 2016/17 season, and Lobi Stars in 2018/19.

However, in each of those encounters, Sundowns managed to overturn the result in the return leg in South Africa. This time, Morena insists the plan is to get the job done away from home.

Remo Stars, the reigning NPFL champions, have had an inconsistent start to the season with three losses, three wins, and one draw in their opening eight games. They recently secured a 5-0 aggregate victory over US Zilimadjou from Comoros to advance to the second round, but they have made it clear they will not show any respect to Sundowns on home soil.

Morena acknowledged the intensity of the task ahead and the charged atmosphere awaiting them in Nigeria.

“The atmosphere at first to be honest, to remember, after us, Bafana Bafana playing against Nigeria. Then Remo Stars won the first round of qualification to play against Mamelodi Sundowns. There was a lot of things that they want to see Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa,” Morena told Sundowns media.

“So, the atmosphere is going to be crazy from when we get to Nigeria. The game is going to start from when we land in Nigeria. So, we we’re going to have to put our minds in it. And whatever comes our way, we just need to move it.”

In a move aimed at rallying support, Remo Stars have confirmed free entry for fans attending the clash, a decision that is expected to create an electric environment in favour of the home team.

“Yeah, I think, they want the upper hand. Obviously, if you postpone your two games, leading to a game like this. It shows the multitude of the game. And also giving free entrance you want the supporters to push the team.

“So, with us. We go in there to do business. The business that we know it’s going to be in the field, and we definitely show that we will do our level best and come with maximum points.”

Today’s encounter between Remo Stars and Memolodi Sundowns will kick off at 3 pm.
