Mamelodi Sundowns consider Deano van Rooyen as Khuliso Mudau replacement

Mamelodi Sundowns have stepped up their search for a right-back after Khuliso Mudau’s long-term injury, with former Orlando Pirates defender Deano van Rooyen emerging as another possible option before the transfer window closes on 21 September.

The Chloorkop-based club are assessing their defensive options after Mudau suffered an Achilles tendon injury during a Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants last month. The Bafana Bafana international subsequently underwent surgery and is expected to be out of action for at least six months.

Mudau’s absence has left Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso with limited specialist cover in the right-back position. Zuko Mdunyelwa is currently the only natural right-back available to the coach, while Thapelo Morena and Kegan Johannes can also operate in the role if required.

The club are understood to be exploring more than one possibility as they seek defensive reinforcement. Thabang Matuludi remains Sundowns’ main target, although negotiations with Polokwane City have not yet produced an agreement.

“The main target remains Thabang Matuludi, but at the moment, Polokwane City is not willing to sell him,” said a source.

“Van Rooyen now remains another option.”

Van Rooyen has become a candidate after recently leaving Orlando Pirates, where he struggled to secure regular playing time. The former Stellenbosch FC player is currently a free agent, meaning Sundowns could potentially complete a deal without needing to negotiate a transfer fee with another club.

The possibility of recruiting Van Rooyen gives the reigning Betway Premiership side an alternative as they continue to address the defensive gap created by Mudau’s injury. However, Matuludi remains the club’s preferred option, despite Polokwane City’s current reluctance to sell.

Sundowns must make a decision before the transfer window deadline on 21 September if they are to bring in additional cover for the position. Cardoso has already had to consider internal solutions, with Morena and Johannes among the players able to provide cover alongside Mdunyelwa.

Mudau’s injury has therefore intensified the club’s recruitment plans, with the search now focused on securing a player capable of helping fill the right-back role for the rest of the season. Van Rooyen’s availability as a free agent makes him an additional option, while the club continue to monitor the situation surrounding Matuludi.
