Mamelodi Sundowns confirm Miguel Reisinho departure after one season

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the departure of Portuguese midfielder Miguel Reisinho after just one season with the club, bringing an early end to a spell in South Africa that produced only six appearances and one goal.

The CAF Champions League champions announced on Friday through their social media platforms that Reisinho is leaving The Brazilians. The midfielder had already indicated that his time at the Tshwane giants was ending, announcing his departure on his personal Instagram account on 7 August.

Reisinho is believed to have left Sundowns by mutual agreement after his move failed to develop as planned. His exit means the 2025-26 campaign will be remembered as a short and disappointing chapter for the player, who joined Masandawana as a free agent in September 2025.

The Portuguese midfielder arrived after leaving Boavista, but he struggled to establish himself as a regular member of the Sundowns first team. Across all competitions, he played six matches and scored once during his brief stay at the club.

Sundowns’ decision to confirm his departure comes as the team prepares to return its attention to domestic cup competition. The side must overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Golden Arrows if it is to reach the MTN8 final.

The second leg of the MTN8 semi-final is scheduled for Sunday at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium. Kick-off is set for 15:00.

The tie will provide Sundowns with an immediate opportunity to respond on the pitch after the club brought an end to Reisinho’s time in its squad. Golden Arrows carry a narrow advantage from the opening match, leaving the champions needing at least two goals without conceding if they are to progress after 90 minutes.

For Reisinho, the move to Sundowns began with the prospect of a fresh challenge following his departure from Boavista. However, the 2025 signing was unable to secure a sustained run of matches, making six appearances before the club and player agreed to part company.

His own farewell message on 7 August preceded the official confirmation by Sundowns, which followed on Friday. The announcement formally closes his short spell with the club, while Sundowns now focus on the decisive domestic cup fixture against Golden Arrows.

The MTN8 semi-final second leg will be played at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday, with the 15:00 kick-off giving Sundowns the chance to overturn the one-goal disadvantage and keep their cup campaign alive.
