Miguel Cardoso pays tribute to Jayden Adams

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Jayden Adams, describing the midfielder as an exceptional footballer and an even more remarkable person whose legacy will forever remain with the club.

Cardoso took to social media to express his grief following Adams’ passing, reflecting on the profound impact the South African international had on the Sundowns family. The Portuguese tactician spoke with emotion as he remembered the player’s character, talent and the close bond they developed during their time together.

“I felt the need to express a little bit what Jaden meant to us, what he means to us, what he’ll remain to and continue to mean to us, but I had to write like if I was writing for him. Basically, Jayden, I don’t have words to tell you what you were, what you are and what you mean to us. We received you in our family not long after my arrival in the club and we grew together,” Cardoso wrote on social media.

The Sundowns coach went on to recall the first time Adams truly caught his attention, reminiscing about a standout performance during his time at Stellenbosch FC. It was a display that convinced Cardoso he was watching a player blessed with extraordinary intelligence and natural ability.

“I remember watching you play against Stade Malien at Loftus in the Conference League. It was your last match in Stellenbosch. Goal, that incredible first post movement you usually have and that beautiful header.

“I saw you easy, medium pace, reading the pitch and placing accordingly, like you had a GPS and could avoid the traffic. That ball was clean, the game becoming quick, the teammates playing better. I remember asking in what position you were better player and there was no clear answer on that.”

Cardoso’s tribute painted the picture of a footballer whose understanding of the game made him invaluable. Rather than relying solely on physical attributes, Adams impressed with his intelligence, positioning and ability to dictate the rhythm of matches, qualities that quickly earned the admiration of his coach and teammates.

The Portuguese manager’s emotional words highlighted the strong relationship the pair built after Adams joined Mamelodi Sundowns. Cardoso described the midfielder as someone who became an integral part of the club’s family, both on and off the pitch, while acknowledging the lasting impact he will continue to have on everyone who knew him.

Adams’ death has sent shockwaves through South African football, with an outpouring of tributes arriving from teammates, coaches, supporters and clubs across the country. The midfielder was widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in South African football, having established himself as a key figure for both Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.

Cardoso’s moving tribute stands as one of the most personal messages shared since the heartbreaking news, capturing not only Adams’ qualities as a footballer but also the respect, affection and admiration he inspired within the Sundowns dressing room.

As the football community continues to mourn his passing, the words of his coach serve as a powerful reminder that Jayden Adams’ influence extended far beyond the pitch, leaving behind memories that will remain with his teammates, coaches and supporters for years to come.
