Mamelodi Sundowns as ‘best team in Africa’ – Senegal and Al Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

Al Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has described Mamelodi Sundowns as the “best team in Africa” after the South African side defeated the Saudi Arabian club to win the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup.

Sundowns secured a 2-1 victory over Al Ahli at Loftus Stadium on Saturday, with Portuguese playmaker Nuno Santos scoring both goals to settle a closely contested final.

The match brought together the champions of Asia and Africa, with Sundowns ultimately prevailing after making the most of key moments.

Mendy admitted Al Ahli were left disappointed by the result but praised his team for their performance and suggested the outcome was decided by fine margins.

“A lot of disappointment. I think we played a great match, but a final is decided by details, set pieces and concentration,” Mendy said after the game, according to CAFOnline.

“Up front, I think we could have wrapped up the match in the first half. That’s how it is. I’m proud of my team.”

The former Chelsea goalkeeper was particularly impressed by Sundowns, who he believes demonstrated why they are regarded among the continent’s leading sides.

“I think we showed character and commitment here in South Africa against the best team in Africa, that’s for sure. They’re one of the best teams I’ve ever faced,” he added.

“They have a lot of quality, but we came here and showed our quality in our football.”

Sundowns’ victory adds another international trophy to a period of sustained success under coach Miguel Cardoso, with the Brazilians continuing to establish themselves as a major force in African football.

For Mendy, the match provided another opportunity to test himself against high-level opposition after a distinguished career at club and international level.

The Senegal goalkeeper recently announced his retirement from international football after winning 59 caps for his country.

Mendy was part of the Senegal side that won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and also represented the Teranga Lions at two World Cups.
