Mamelodi Sundowns appoint Pedro Dias to lead scouting operation

Mamelodi Sundowns have appointed Portuguese football administrator Pedro Dias as their new Head of Scouting, strengthening the club’s technical structure as the reigning African champions prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.

Dias joins the Tshwane club at Chloorkop after completing his spell as Director of Football at AmaZulu FC. In that role, he helped shape the club’s football strategy, with responsibility for recruitment, squad planning and the wider technical direction of the first team.

He also developed a reputation as a thorough recruiter who could identify talent to meet both immediate needs and longer-term objectives. His work at AmaZulu FC included helping the club focus on players capable of improving the existing squad while supporting its future ambitions.

The appointment represents another substantial investment by Mamelodi Sundowns in the organisation behind the team. The club are continuing to strengthen each area of their operation as they aim to remain among the leading sides in African football.

Although attention is usually focused on the players and coaching staff, Sundowns have placed increasing importance on the work carried out away from matchdays. Strategic planning, detailed scouting and recruitment built around a clear football identity have been central to the club’s sustained success.

Dias will oversee the club’s talent-identification programme in his new role. His duties will include managing domestic and international scouting networks and tracking both emerging prospects and established players across a range of markets.

His remit is also expected to include Sundowns’ development structures. He will contribute to recruitment for those teams as the club seeks to create a pipeline that can serve both its current requirements and its long-term plans.

The Portuguese administrator brings experience from several football environments. Before moving to South Africa, he held positions with Sporting Clube Lourinhanense in Portugal. He has also worked in Canada with Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC, as well as in New Zealand.

Those roles gave Dias exposure to different football cultures, recruitment systems and approaches to player development. The relationships he has developed across the African football landscape in recent years are also expected to support his work at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Recruitment has been a key part of Sundowns’ dominance over the past decade. The club have consistently sought players with the technical ability to contribute immediately, while also ensuring they fit the tactical demands and culture established at Chloorkop.

Dias’ arrival suggests the club want to make that process even more precise. Sundowns are preparing to defend their CAF Champions League crown, regain the Betway Premiership title and compete strongly in every competition they enter.

Expectations have risen further after their continental success, but the club are continuing to focus on the foundations that support the first team. The appointment of Dias underlines Sundowns’ belief that major honours are secured on the pitch but built through careful work long before the season begins.
