Mamady Diambou: Brest strengthen midfield with Salzburg switch

Mali midfielder Mamady Diambou has joined Stade Brestois from Salzburg, bringing his time in Austria to an end with a move to Ligue 1. The 23-year-old defensive midfielder has signed a contract with the French club running until 30 June 2028.

Diambou arrives in Brest after more than five years in the Salzburg system, having first moved to the Austrian club from Mali side Guidars FC in January 2021. He spent part of the 2020-21 season on loan at FC Liefering before returning to Salzburg.

The midfielder was also loaned to Swiss club FC Luzern during the 2022-23 campaign, a spell that preceded his return to Salzburg at the end of that season. His latest transfer was completed on 13 August 2026, with no fee disclosed for the move.

A right-footed player whose primary role is in defensive midfield, Diambou was born in Bamako and represents Mali. He stands 1.76m tall and joins a Stade Brestois side competing in France’s top division.

His honours in Austria include two league titles with Salzburg, won in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. He also helped the club claim the Austrian Cup in 2021-22.

Diambou’s arrival follows a period in which his recorded appearances for Salzburg at the start of the 2026-27 season stood at zero across the Bundesliga, Europa League qualifying and the Austrian Cup. He now begins a new chapter in France with Stade Brestois, who have secured his services through June 2028.
