Chelsea F.C. defender Mamadou Sarr says he wants to model his game on Virgil van Dijk as the young Senegalese centre-back outlines his ambitions following a confident early impression in a Blues shirt.
Speaking in his first interview with ESPN, Sarr presented a clear picture of the standards he has set for himself.
Calm in delivery but firm in intent, the defender pointed to some of the game’s leading figures as benchmarks for his development while stressing the importance of leadership in his role.
“I want to be like Virgil van Dijk. I love Van Dijk. When I was younger, that’s what they called me,” he says confidently.
The comparison links Sarr with one of the most recognisable central defenders in world football, a player widely associated with authority and composure at the back.
Sarr also acknowledged parallels drawn between himself and Ibrahima Konaté, highlighting the value he places on presence and communication.
“It’s very similar. He’s a leader. For a defender, it’s very important to be a leader,” he explains.
That emphasis on leadership runs through Sarr’s description of his own game. “On and off the pitch, I talk a lot.
It’s an important role,” he stresses, underlining how he views central defence as both a tactical and organisational position within the team structure.
Beyond personality traits, Sarr points to technical elements he believes define his style. “I think I anticipate well.
With the ball, I can make a good pass,” he explains. Reading play and initiating moves from the back, he suggests, are essential skills in modern football where defenders are expected to contribute to build-up play.
Despite his composed outlook, Sarr admits his motivation is rooted in a childhood ambition. “When I was little, I had a dream: to become the best central defender in the world.”
The statement reflects a long-term goal that continues to shape his mindset as he adapts to senior football.
His comments arrive after a notable first start in Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Hull City A.F.C., a performance viewed as an encouraging early step.
Through his words, Sarr sketches the profile of a player intent on growth — guided by elite examples, committed to leadership, and focused on fulfilling a long-held ambition.
