Mali international Mamadou Sangare and DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa are among the nominees for the Premier League Player of the Month award for August following impressive starts to the new campaign.

Sangare has enjoyed a remarkable introduction to English football since joining Brentford, with the new Bees signing wasting little time in making an impact in the Premier League.

The Malian midfielder produced an impressive display on his Premier League debut, playing an important role in Brentford’s convincing 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Sangare capped his performance by providing an assist, immediately announcing himself as a player capable of making a difference at the highest level of English football.

His strong start has earned him recognition among the leading performers in the league for August, with the Brentford midfielder now in contention for one of the Premier League’s monthly individual awards.

Wissa, meanwhile, has also been influential for Newcastle United since making the move to the Magpies.

The DR Congo international contributed an assist in Newcastle’s entertaining 2-2 draw against Liverpool before finding the back of the net in their 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

His combination of creativity and goalscoring ability has made him a key attacking outlet for Newcastle, while his performances during the opening month of the campaign have earned him a place on the shortlist.

However, Sangare and Wissa face strong competition for the award, with several other high-profile Premier League stars also nominated.

They will compete against Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori, Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, João Pedro of Chelsea and goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.

The nominations highlight the impressive individual performances produced across the Premier League during August, with Sangare and Wissa hoping their contributions will be enough to earn them the prestigious monthly prize.

For Sangare in particular, a Player of the Month award would provide an excellent start to his career at Brentford, while Wissa will be aiming to build on his strong beginning to life at Newcastle.

The winner will be announced after the voting process, with both African stars hoping to emerge ahead of their highly-rated competition.
