Mamadou Sangaré withdraws from Mali squad to rest
Mamadou Sangaré will not feature for Mali during the current international break after opting to rest following a demanding run of matches.
The RC Lens midfielder had initially been included in the national squad by head coach Tom Saintfiet, but has since withdrawn after requesting time to recover physically. The decision was accepted by the Malian coaching staff, who acknowledged the player’s need for a pause.
“He was on the list initially, but he won’t be. I spoke with him: he feels the need to take a break. We respected his decision ,” Saintfiet said.
Sangaré, 23, has been heavily involved at both club and international level, featuring regularly in a schedule that has left little room for recovery. His absence reflects concerns over fatigue after a sustained period of high-intensity performances.
Saintfiet indicated that the player’s workload had been significant, underlining the importance of allowing him time to regain full fitness before returning to action.
“He plays practically every match with Mali and Lens. It’s normal that he needs to recover ,” the coach added.
Despite his absence, Sangaré continues to be regarded as a key figure within the national set-up. Saintfiet praised his development, highlighting his intelligence on the pitch, discipline, and consistent improvement in recent years.
At club level, there have already been signs of careful management regarding the midfielder’s physical condition.
During Lens’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Angers, coach Pierre Sage opted to substitute Sangaré at half-time, a decision seen as a precautionary measure to limit his workload.
The move aligns with a broader approach to player welfare, particularly for those involved in frequent fixtures across multiple competitions.
Sangaré’s decision to step away from international duty, even temporarily, points to the growing demands placed on players balancing commitments for both club and country
. For Mali, his absence will be felt, but the priority remains ensuring he returns fully fit for future matches.
