Mamadou Sakho Supports Deschamps’ World Cup Selections, Grateful for Call-Up
Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has expressed his full support for Didier Deschamps’ World Cup squad selections after being named in France’s 23-man list for the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
Speaking to BFM TV, the former Paris Saint-Germain player admitted feeling anxious in the lead-up to the announcement but said he was ultimately pleased with both his inclusion and the manager’s decisions.
“Until the list was announced, I had butterflies in my stomach because in football, nothing is ever certain,” Sakho revealed. “I am satisfied with this team. If the coach thinks this is the best group to do well at the World Cup, I respect his choices.”
Sakho’s measured and positive reaction comes in stark contrast to that of Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri, who publicly questioned his omission from the squad. While Nasri has suggested he may reconsider his international future, Sakho has taken a more diplomatic stance, backing Deschamps’ vision for the team.
The 24-year-old centre-back has been a key figure for Les Bleus in recent qualifying matches, notably scoring twice in the decisive playoff victory over Ukraine. Now with his place on the plane to Brazil secured, Sakho will be aiming to anchor France’s defence as they look to make a deep run in the tournament.
