Belgian forward of Guinean descent, Malick Fofana, was hospitalised on Sunday after Olympique Lyonnais’s 2-1 triumph against Racing Strasbourg in the French Ligue 1.

The 20-year-old winger was stretchered off during the match after a heavy challenge from Strasbourg captain Ismaël Doukouré, who was shown a red card for the incident.

Fofana was immediately sent for scans to determine the extent of the damage. Follow-up examinations conducted on Monday confirmed that he has suffered a serious right ankle sprain along with additional ligament strains, which are expected to require surgery. If surgery is confirmed, the young forward is likely to be sidelined for several months, dealing a significant blow to Paulo Fonseca’s squad.

Lyon already face a shortage of options on the left wing, with Ghanaian winger Ernest Nuamah still recovering from an ACL injury sustained in April. Nuamah is not expected to return to action until 2026, further limiting Lyon’s attacking depth.

“Olympique Lyonnais will put in place all necessary measures to ensure Malick Fofana receives the best possible medical care and supports his rehabilitation, in order to plan for his return to the squad as quickly as possible,” the club said in an official statement.

Lyon will return to action on Wednesday with an away fixture against Paris FC as they await further updates on Fofana’s recovery timeline.
