Malian midfielder Yves Bissouma to remain at Tottenham until winter transfer window

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma will remain with the club until at least the winter transfer window after suffering a knee injury that has delayed any potential move.

The Malian international, sidelined since the summer, is expected to make his return to action in October. According to reports from Africasoccer, the setback has effectively halted negotiations with several clubs that had expressed interest in signing him during the current window.

English interest blocked

Bissouma, who joined Tottenham in 2022, had drawn significant attention from a number of Premier League sides.

Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Chelsea were all monitoring his situation closely, hoping to capitalise on his uncertain role in north London.

The midfielder himself is understood to have been open to continuing his career in England, with a preference for remaining in the Premier League.

However, Tottenham’s management reportedly rejected the idea of allowing him to join a direct domestic rival.

Club executives are said to favour a transfer abroad should a permanent deal be arranged, a position that has created an impasse in negotiations.

A career in flux

Bissouma’s time at Tottenham has been mixed. Signed for a substantial fee after impressing at Brighton, the 28-year-old has struggled to secure a consistent starting role.

His injury issues, coupled with managerial changes at the club, have made it difficult for him to establish the same level of influence he displayed on the south coast.

Despite these challenges, Bissouma remains highly regarded for his physicality, ball-winning ability and composure in midfield.

Many of the clubs pursuing him see him as an asset capable of strengthening their engine room, particularly given his Premier League experience.

Options abroad emerge

While interest from England appears to have been blocked, Bissouma is not short of suitors overseas. According to Africasoccer, Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer are among the clubs exploring the possibility of signing him.

In Europe, Turkish giants Galatasaray, Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe have all been linked, alongside French side Olympique Lyonnais.

These clubs offer contrasting projects, from domestic title challenges to rebuilding efforts, and could provide the midfielder with a fresh start outside England should Tottenham choose to sanction his departure in January.

Divided opinions

The uncertainty around Bissouma’s future has sparked debate among analysts and former professionals.

Former Mali defender Molla Wagué has publicly urged Tottenham to retain the midfielder, arguing that he has the ability to make an impact once fit again.

Conversely, pundits such as Bassirou Dembélé have stressed that Bissouma should remain in the Premier League if he is to revive his career, insisting that his experience and skillset make him well suited to English football.

Looking ahead

For now, the situation remains unresolved. Tottenham will keep Bissouma in their squad until the January window, allowing him time to recover from his injury and prove his worth on the pitch.

Whether he stays to fight for his place in north London or departs for a new challenge abroad could depend heavily on his form once he returns in October.

As the winter window approaches, interest in the Malian midfielder is expected to intensify once more, with Tottenham needing to decide whether to cash in or reintegrate him fully into Ange Postecoglou’s plans.
