Malian midfielder Mamadou Sangaré completes move to RC Lens on long-term deal

Malian midfielder Mamadou Sangaré completes move to RC Lens on long-term deal

RC Lens have confirmed the signing of Malian international Mamadou Sangaré from Austrian side Rapid Vienna in a transfer worth an initial €5 million, with a further €3 million included in potential add-ons.

The 23-year-old midfielder has committed to a five-year contract with the French club, keeping him at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis until June 2030. His arrival is designed to bolster Lens’ midfield options following the departure of Neil El Aynaoui earlier in the summer.

Sangaré enjoyed a standout season with Rapid Vienna, featuring in 44 matches across all competitions. During that campaign, he contributed three goals and three assists, while also earning recognition for his consistent energy and tactical discipline in the centre of the pitch.

His ability to combine defensive responsibilities with a willingness to push forward made him a vital figure for the Austrian side, and those same qualities are now expected to serve Lens in Ligue 1.

The Mali international is well regarded for his intensity, pressing strength and forward projection, attributes that align with Lens’ high-tempo style of play under coach Franck Haise.

His versatility allows him to operate both in deeper roles as a shield in front of the defence and higher up the pitch, supporting attacking transitions. For a team that thrives on collective effort and physical commitment, Sangaré’s profile represents a natural fit.

Lens’ decision to pursue Sangaré comes at a crucial time as the club seeks to maintain competitiveness in both domestic and European competitions. After enjoying an impressive campaign last season, in which Lens secured European qualification, the need to refresh and strengthen the squad became a priority.

The loss of El Aynaoui created a gap in midfield, and Sangaré’s arrival provides immediate reinforcement while also offering long-term value given his age and room for development.

At international level, Sangaré has also gained valuable experience representing Mali. Though still in the early stages of his career with the national team, he has been praised for his maturity on the ball and his ability to adapt quickly to different tactical systems. His presence at Lens is also likely to enhance the club’s growing reputation for nurturing and showcasing African talent in European football.

Speaking about the transfer, Lens officials expressed confidence in Sangaré’s ability to integrate quickly into the squad and adapt to the demands of French football. The club highlighted his strong mentality and work ethic as qualities that will endear him to both teammates and supporters.

For Sangaré, the move represents a major step forward in his career, offering him the chance to test himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues while playing in front of the passionate Lens fanbase. The midfielder is expected to link up with his new teammates immediately as preparations continue for the start of the Ligue 1 season.

With the deal now completed, Lens supporters will be eager to see how Sangaré’s energy and drive translate onto the pitch, as the club aims to build on recent successes and continue its rise in French football.
