Malian international Mahamadou Doumbia set for long lay-off after serious knee injury

Al-Ittihad midfielder Mahamadou Doumbia will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a serious knee injury during a Saudi King’s Cup semi-final defeat.

The 21-year-old Malian international sustained a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, an injury that is expected to keep him out of action for approximately six months.

The setback represents a significant blow for both his club and the Mali national team, who have been informed of his condition.

Doumbia was forced off early in the semi-final clash against Al-Kholood on 18 March, a match that ended 2-2 before Al-Ittihad were beaten 5-4 on penalties.

Having started the game, the midfielder lasted just 12 minutes before leaving the pitch and being taken to hospital for further assessment.

Medical examinations later confirmed the severity of the injury.

In a statement relayed by the Malian Football Federation (FEMAFOOT), the extent of the damage was made clear.

“Following medical examinations, the Eagles’ doctor, Dr. Halidou Maiga, was informed that the results revealed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in the right knee. Surgical intervention is planned in the coming days,” reports FEMAFOOT.

The diagnosis means Doumbia’s campaign has come to an early end, ruling him out for the rest of the current season and the months ahead.

Recovery from such injuries typically requires surgery followed by a lengthy rehabilitation period.

Since joining Al-Ittihad in September 2025 from Royal Antwerp, Doumbia had established himself as an important figure in midfield.

His performances had quickly made him a regular presence in the team, underlining the scale of the loss for the Saudi club.

The injury also interrupts his growing role with the Malian national side, where he had been building momentum before this setback.
