Mamadou Samassa, the experienced Troyes goalkeeper, will not participate in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Mali. Although initially included in coach Mohamed Magassouba’s preliminary 27-man squad for the tournament in Egypt, Samassa has ultimately decided to withdraw from the national team.

According to Magassouba, Samassa set conditions for his participation that the coach could not accept. “Samassa called me to say he wanted guarantees of being a starter during the AFCON,” Magassouba explained to Foot Mali. “I told him that no player is guaranteed a starting position before the competition begins. He then retorted that he couldn’t come to the national team without being sure he would be in goal during the AFCON and that he was therefore declining the selection.” The coach suggested that he viewed these demands as a form of blackmail, emphasizing that selections for major tournaments are based on merit, preparation, and the team’s tactical needs rather than individual guarantees.

Samassa’s withdrawal represents a significant loss for the Eagles of Mali. The 33-year-old goalkeeper has earned 11 caps for his country, bringing both international experience and leadership to the squad. His presence in goal was expected to provide stability and confidence, particularly in a tournament as competitive as the Africa Cup of Nations, where goalkeeping can often be decisive in tight matches.

The decision also highlights the challenges that coaches sometimes face in balancing player expectations with team cohesion. Magassouba has repeatedly emphasized that starting positions are earned through performance in training and matches, rather than promised in advance. This principle is critical for maintaining fairness and morale within a squad, especially in high-stakes tournaments where every match is closely contested.

Despite Samassa’s absence, Mali still possesses a strong goalkeeping department. The coaching staff will now rely on other options to fill the crucial role between the posts, ensuring that the Eagles remain competitive in Group E alongside Ivory Coast, South Africa, and Namibia. The team’s preparations for the AFCON will continue, focusing on building cohesion, tactical discipline, and readiness for the opening match of the tournament.

While Samassa’s choice to step away may disappoint fans who had hoped to see him in Egypt, it underscores the importance of commitment and alignment between players and coaching staff at the international level. Magassouba and his assistants will now turn their attention to maximizing the performance of the squad at their disposal, aiming to make a strong impression in the continental competition despite this setback.

Ultimately, the Eagles of Mali remain focused on their objectives for the 2019 AFCON, determined to compete at the highest level and represent their country with pride. Samassa’s absence will be felt, but the team’s resilience and preparation will be key factors as they seek to navigate the group stage and make a deep run in Egypt.
