Ibrahim Diarra, the highly-rated Malian winger, is already making headlines at FC Barcelona just weeks after joining the club’s youth setup.
At only 18, the former U17 World Cup standout is quickly living up to the immense promise that prompted the Catalan giants to secure his services nearly two years ago.
Barcelona’s interest in Diarra dates back to his scintillating performance at the U17 World Cup, where he captained Mali and delivered an eye-catching return of five goals and four assists in seven matches.
His efforts propelled Mali to an impressive third-place finish and ignited the attention of several top European clubs.
Ultimately, it was Barcelona who moved decisively, reaching an agreement with the Africa Foot Academy in Mali for his transfer, to be completed when Diarra turned 18 in December 2024.
The deal, reportedly valued at €2.5 million, marked a record investment from the La Masia academy in West African talent.
The young winger, known as “Kàka” for his flair and agility in one-on-one situations, has wasted no time making an impact.
After a quiet start as he settled into his new surroundings, Diarra earned a call-up to Barcelona’s reserve team, coached by former club defender Juliano Belletti.
Initially used as a substitute in the UEFA Youth League knockout rounds, his brief cameos were enough to earn a starting role in the final.
That decision proved decisive. Diarra lit up the final with a dazzling performance, scoring twice and assisting once in a commanding team display.
He was named man of the match and drew praise from scouts and analysts alike. It was the latest milestone in what is fast becoming a meteoric rise.
“He has this rare ability to be a free spirit without ever stepping outside the team. That’s what makes great players,” said Belletti, underlining the maturity and balance the teenager brings to the pitch.
Diarra’s performances have also extended beyond the Youth League.
With goals already recorded for the Juvenil A side, he is firmly on Barcelona’s radar as a potential first-team candidate.
His blend of pace, dribbling, and decision-making in the final third is drawing comparisons to past La Masia graduates, and his trajectory points toward an accelerated path to senior football.
Barcelona fans and coaches alike are watching with growing anticipation.
If his current form continues, Ibrahim Diarra may not remain a youth prospect for much longer.
