Mali coach Demba Mamadou Traoré expressed strong confidence in his squad as they prepare to host the WAFU-A U17 qualifying tournament in Bamako.

Speaking after the team’s training session on Wednesday, 1 October 2025, Traoré said he felt proud of his players and optimistic about their chances. “I am proud and confident in my players. We are in a group with two English-speaking nations, Liberia and Gambia, but we took that into account and prepared very well,” he said.

The coach confirmed that he has already finalised his squad list for the competition, highlighting that the group is fully focused and motivated ahead of the campaign.

Mali, known as the “Aiglonnets” at youth level, will compete in Group A alongside Liberia, Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau.

The young side hopes to make a strong start and deliver a performance worthy of their country’s footballing tradition.

The tournament serves as the qualifying event for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), making it a crucial test for Mali’s new generation of talent.

Traoré said the team had studied their opponents carefully and adjusted their preparations accordingly, with a clear aim of topping the group and progressing.

The coach is no stranger to continental youth competitions. He previously guided Mali’s U20 national team during the 2022 WAFU-A qualifying tournament in Nouakchott, where his side impressed with their discipline and teamwork. He believes that experience will help him lead this younger group to success.

With the arrival of visiting teams in Bamako, excitement is building for the tournament’s opening matches.

Mali’s supporters are expected to turn out in large numbers to back the Aiglonnets as they aim to secure qualification and continue the nation’s rich history in youth football.

The squad’s preparations have included intensive tactical sessions, physical conditioning, and friendly matches designed to build cohesion and resilience. Traoré praised the players’ dedication and work ethic, describing them as “hungry and determined” to compete at the highest level.

Mali’s youth system has produced several stars over the years, and there is growing belief that this new generation can follow in their footsteps.

The WAFU-A tournament will provide a vital platform for these emerging talents to showcase their skills and gain valuable international experience.

As kick-off approaches, Traoré remains focused on one clear objective: leading Mali to qualification for the U17 AFCON and giving fans a reason to celebrate.
