Mali beat Ghana in a friendly ahead of U17 AFCON
Mali defeated Ghana 1-0 in an international friendly match on Saturday in Morocco ahead of the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The closely fought encounter was decided in the 65th minute when an unfortunate own goal handed Mali victory despite an impressive overall display from the Black Starlets.
Ghana created several dangerous opportunities throughout the match and looked lively in attack for long spells, but the Malian goalkeeper produced a number of outstanding saves to keep the Starlets from finding an equaliser.
The Black Starlets showed encouraging signs with their pressing, movement, and attacking play as the technical team continued assessing the squad ahead of the continental championship.
Although disappointed with the result, head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance and described the game as an important test before the tournament begins.
“This was the type of test we needed ahead of the AFCON. Mali gave us intensity, discipline, and competition at a very high level, and I’m happy with how the boys responded,” Coach Ogum said after the game.
The former Asante Kotoko trainer also commended his players for their tactical discipline and positive approach despite the narrow defeat.
“We created enough chances to win the game, but sometimes football is like that. What is important for me is the way the boys approached the game, their movement, their pressing, and their confidence on the ball. These are things we can build on heading into the tournament.”
Coach Ogum further explained that the match had provided valuable lessons for the squad as they prepare to face some of the continent’s top youth teams.
“At this stage, results are secondary to preparation. We have identified a few areas to improve, and that is exactly why these matches are important. I am convinced the team will be ready when the tournament starts.”
The Black Starlets are expected to leave their training base in Mohammedia on Monday and travel to Rabat, where the 2026 U17 AFCON tournament will take place.
