Mali’s capital, Bamako, will stage the fifth edition of the General Assimi Goïta Super Cup from 15 August to 7 September 2025, in an event aimed at promoting national cohesion through football.
The tournament, held under the high patronage of the President of the Transition and Head of State, was officially announced on 5 August during a press conference at the Ouezzin Coulibaly Stadium by Colonel Cheick Mohamed Chérif Tounkara, president of the National Organising Committee.
Far more than a sporting competition, the Super Cup has become a nationwide rallying point, drawing participation from all 19 administrative regions, the district of Bamako, and three key institutions of the Republic — the Presidency, the Government and the National Transitional Council (NTC).
The objective is clear: to promote cohesion, peace, national reconciliation and living together through football, a universal language and a mirror of civic values, Mr Tounkara said.
This year’s draw will take place on 14 August, with matches to be played at the Mamadou Konaté Stadium and the Ouezzin Coulibaly Stadium.
The opening games will mark the beginning of a three-week competition that blends athletic rivalry with a deeper message of solidarity.
Mr Tounkara expressed confidence that the 2025 edition would meet the expectations of both players and supporters, describing it as a platform to showcase unity in a period of national rebuilding.
We are determined to deliver a tournament that reflects the resilience and aspirations of our people, he added.
The Assimi Goïta Super Cup has grown in stature since its inception, evolving into a symbolic expression of Malian pride.
For many young people, it offers more than the pursuit of silverware — it stands as a reminder of shared identity and the importance of collective purpose.
Over the years, the competition has been embraced not only for its sporting drama but also for its role in encouraging dialogue and connection among communities.
Its emphasis on fair play, mutual respect and collaboration mirrors the civic values organisers hope to strengthen across the nation.
As Bamako prepares to welcome teams and fans from across the country, the tournament’s significance extends beyond the stadiums.
In the current national context, the Super Cup represents a message of hope — that through sport, Mali can continue to build bridges, foster understanding, and move forward together.
