Malawi has advanced to the second round of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers following the withdrawal of the Democratic Republic of Congo from the competition.
The two-legged tie between Malawi and Congo was originally scheduled for February 20 and February 26, 2025.
However, the Congolese Football Federation confirmed that its women’s national team would not be taking part, effectively granting Malawi automatic qualification to the next stage.
FIFA sanctions lead to Congo’s withdrawal
The decision to withdraw follows sanctions imposed on Congo by FIFA due to alleged third-party interference in football governance.
FIFA had previously stated that the suspension was “effective immediately,” preventing the country from participating in international competitions until further notice.
Congo’s withdrawal from the qualifiers is a direct consequence of these sanctions, which have impacted both men’s and women’s football in the country.
While no further details have been provided by FIFA, the ruling has once again highlighted the governing body’s strict stance against external interference in national football associations.
Malawi awaits next opponent
With their place in the second round secured without playing a match, Malawi will now await the completion of the remaining first-round fixtures to determine their next opponent.
The road to the 2026 Women’s AFCON continues, and Malawi will be hoping to make the most of their unexpected advantage as they prepare for the next phase of the competition.
