Maku keeps club future under wraps before U20 Cosafa Championship

Newly appointed Amajita captain Lazola Maku says he will wait until after the U20 Cosafa Championship in Mozambique before deciding what comes next in his club career.

The 19-year-old is currently without a contract after leaving Siwelele when his deal expired. He spent several weeks in Europe, where he was assessed by a couple of clubs, before returning to South Africa to join up with the national under-20 squad.

Maku has also been linked with Mamelodi Sundowns, but declined to discuss the possibility of a move when asked about his recent time in Europe by iDiski Times.

“At the moment I am focused with the U20 national team and hopefully after the tournament we will see [what happens],” he said.

Maku made five first-team appearances for Siwelele after being part of the club’s rebrand from SuperSport United. He previously came through the Ubuntu Football Academy.

Asked why he was not currently contracted to a club, Maku replied: “I don’t have a comment [on why I’m not contracted to a club at the moment].”

He has now been given the captaincy of Amajita and is one of the most experienced players in the squad, alongside Fletcher Smythe Lowe. His continental success and FIFA World Cup experience are expected to make him an important figure during the tournament.

Maku said he was grateful to the coach for entrusting him with the role and believes his experience can help the team.

“I’d like to thank the coach for appointing me as captain and for me being part of the previous U20 group, it’s for me to now help and lead the group, share my experiences with the team and hopefully lead the team to be victorious,” he said.
