Majeed Waris Leaves Valenciennes Ahead of Ghana’s World Cup Preparations
Ghanaian striker Majeed Waris has officially concluded his stint at French club Valenciennes ahead of schedule, returning home to join the Black Stars’ preparations for the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup. The 22-year-old, who joined Valenciennes on loan from Spartak Moscow in January, made an impressive impact by scoring nine goals in Ligue 1 despite the club’s eventual relegation to France’s second division.
Valenciennes, already condemned to Ligue 2, confirmed Waris’ early departure in a statement: “He is returning to Ghana for personal reasons. Preparations for the World Cup begin on Monday.”
Waris has been named in coach Kwesi Appiah’s provisional squad for the tournament in Brazil, and his early release ensures he will be available for full training as the national team ramps up its pre-World Cup preparations.
Despite his efforts and consistent performances, Waris was unable to help Valenciennes avoid the drop. However, his form has boosted his international stock, making him a key attacking option for Ghana as they head into a challenging Group G alongside Germany, Portugal, and the United States.
With his club season now over, Waris turns his full focus to representing his country on football’s biggest stage.
