Mainz 05 ease fears over Ransford Yeboah Konigsdorffer injury

Mainz 05 have moved to ease concerns surrounding Ransford Yeboah Konigsdorffer after the forward picked up a painful facial injury during their 4-1 pre-season victory over Kaiserslautern.

The 24-year-old was struck heavily in the face by FCK goalkeeper Yannick Onohiol’s arm while challenging for a high ball, resulting in strong nosebleeding that took time to stop.

Konigsdorffer was substituted as a precaution, but was soon seen back on the sidelines watching the remainder of the game, a reassuring sign for supporters and staff. Mainz insist there is currently no suspicion of a serious problem. Sporting director Niko Bungert admitted the incident “really shocked” everyone in the moment, but explained that early checks suggest the damage is limited.

The club will still examine whether there is any minor fracture to the nose, yet Bungert stressed it does not look like a long-term or “very, very dramatic” issue. With that cautious all-clear, Mainz can expect Konigsdorffer to remain part of their attacking plans for the new season, having avoided the worst-case scenario from what initially appeared to be a nasty collision.
