Kobbie Mainoo dreams of restoring Manchester United to former glory
England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who is of Ghanaian descent, says he wants to help Manchester United return to the top of English and European football by winning major trophies with the club.
The 21-year-old has expressed his ambition to bring back the success associated with United’s past, saying he wants to play a key role in restoring the club’s status among football’s elite.
Speaking in an interview with Prime Video Sport, Mainoo questioned the continued focus on the club’s former achievements while its recent struggles attract criticism.
“I want to bring that to now, and I want to win. I want to win a lot here. That’s my dream, for this club to be at the top again,” Kobbie Mainoo said.
Mainoo wants to restore United’s winning tradition
Mainoo’s ambition comes as Manchester United continue to seek a return to the sustained success they enjoyed under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The club have struggled to challenge consistently for the biggest honours since Ferguson’s departure, despite appointing several managers in an effort to revive their fortunes.
Mainoo believes United must look beyond their history and work towards creating a successful present, with the midfielder determined to contribute to that process.
Manchester United chase major honours
United last won the UEFA Champions League in 2008, while their most recent Premier League title came in the 2012-13 season, Ferguson’s final campaign in charge.
Since then, the club have been unable to reclaim either of those major honours, despite changes in the dugout and attempts to rebuild the squad.
For Mainoo, the challenge is to help United move beyond the memories of past triumphs and establish a new era of success.
His ambition will resonate with supporters eager to see the club competing for the biggest prizes again, while his Ghanaian heritage also gives his progress particular interest among football fans in Ghana and across Africa.
