Mahmoud El-Khatib, the much-admired president of Al-Ahly, is at the center of heartfelt efforts from board members and respected figures urging him to stay on.

His recent decision not to run in the upcoming elections has left many inside the club unsettled, with appeals pouring in for him to reconsider.

At a board meeting on Thursday, Al-Khatib revealed he would step aside, saying he was satisfied with the years he had dedicated to leading the club. Since first being elected in December 2017 and reaffirmed in 2021, he has been a symbol of stability and pride for Al-Ahly.

The board asked him to take more time to think, choosing not to release his statement publicly. Yet, tension has grown after board member Hossam Ghaly’s podcast comments about wanting the presidency. Sources say these remarks, alongside medical warnings, have weighed heavily on Al-Khatib, who was initially prepared to continue.

For many Al-Ahly supporters, the hope remains that El-Khatib will find reason to carry on guiding the club he has served with dedication.
