Magesi FC stay top despite draw as promotion race tightens

Magesi FC’s perfect start to the Motsepe Foundation Championship season was halted by a 1-1 draw against Hungry Lions at Seshego Stadium on Sunday, although Dikwena Tsa Meetse will enter the international break at the top of the table.

Magesi led at half-time after an own goal, but Hungry Lions responded after the interval to earn a point and remain 10th.

Real Native and Leicesterford City keep winning

Real Native remain second after extending their winning run to three matches with a 2-0 victory over Venda Football Club at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on Friday.

Lungelo Dondolo opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half before Leletu Skelem added a second at the start of the second period. The result leaves the Believers in second place, while Venda have lost four consecutive matches and remain bottom without a win.

Leicesterford City climbed from sixth to third after beating Midlands Wanderers 1-0 at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.

Veteran forward Sipho Zwane scored the only goal in the first half to secure a third straight win for City. Midlands Wanderers fell one place to 12th.

Highbury and Gomora United could not be separated in a goalless draw at Nelson Mandela University Stadium.

The match was a six-pointer between two sides seeking a response after defeats in their previous fixtures. Gomora United had lost to Leicesterford City, while Highbury were beaten by leaders Magesi FC last weekend.

The result saw Vusimuzi Vilakazi’s men drop to fourth, with Gomora United remaining eighth.

Cape Town City’s two-match winning run ended with a 0-0 draw against North West University at Fanie du Toit Sports Ground on Saturday.

After beginning the campaign without a victory, Cape Town City had beaten Hungry Lions and Hope FC in successive games. North West University are still looking for their first win of the season.

Hope FC, meanwhile, claimed their first victory in the Championship after beating league debutants Orbit College 1-0 at Athlone Stadium.

Manelisi Ralasi scored in second-half stoppage time as Hope FC recovered from last weekend’s derby defeat. Orbit College’s winless start continues.

Six-goal draw in Upington

Upington City and the University of Pretoria shared six goals in a 3-3 draw at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium.

Bafana Ba Gucci made a fast start, with Simphiwe Mambane scoring from a free-kick before Palelo Mafuyeka headed in a second inside the opening 10 minutes.

The University of Pretoria began their recovery on the half-hour mark when Roy-Keane Avontuur finished from open play. Aphelele Teto then equalised with his first goal for the club.

Leandro De Sousa put AmaTuks ahead after the break, but Mambane completed his brace to secure a point for Upington City.

The Bees moved out of the relegation zone and into 14th place by beating Lerumo Lions 1-0 at Kanyamazane Stadium.

Mlungisi Skosana scored in the first half to give The Bees their first win of the campaign. Lerumo Lions have now suffered successive defeats and dropped from fifth to ninth.
