Magesi FC captain Elvis Chipezeze has been handed call up into the Zimbabwe national team following an outstanding performance in the South African top-flight.
The 35-year-old experienced goalkeeper returns to the Chipolopolo squad after eight-year absence from the national team.
Chipezeze played a pivotal role for Magesi FC in the just ended season, making 29 appearances across competitions for Dikwena tša Meetse.
He fought his way back into the national team following a long absence. The shot-stopper, who kept 10 clean sheets in 25 Premiership matches this season, was initially the league’s top keeper before being overtaken by Mamelodi Sundowns’ Ronwen Williams and Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Chaine, who both have 11 shutouts.
Chipezeze’s resurgence has not gone unnoticed, as Zimbabwe coach Michael Nees has included him in the squad for upcoming friendlies against Niger (June 6) and Burkina Faso (June 10). These matches serve as crucial preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco this December.
The former Baroka FC keeper will compete with Washington Arubi (Marumo Gallants), Zimbabwe’s current No. 1, and Marley Tavaziva (Brentford B) for a starting spot. This call-up marks a redemption opportunity for Chipezeze, whose last major tournament—the 2017 AFCON—ended in disappointment after a series of high-profile errors.
