The Ghana Football Association has received over 600 applications from coaches interested in taking over the vacant Black Stars coaching job in the wake of Otto Addo’s dismissal.
The West African football powerhouse are currently without a substantive coach following the sacking of Otto Addo on the back of poor results during the March international break.
Ghana succumbed to a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Austria last Friday, followed by a 2-1 defeat to Germany on Monday.
With the World Cup fast approaching, the Ghana FA has stormed the market searching for a new caovch to lead the Black Stars at the mundial.
And according Ghana FA boss, Kurt Okraku, the domestic football governing body has over 600 application from coaches interested in the Black Stars job, signaling Ghana’s enduring reputation in world football despite recent struggles on the pitch.
“We have received over 600 applications for the Black Stars job,” Okraku revealed, highlighting the scale and competitiveness of the ongoing selection process.
The coaching role became vacant after Addo was relieved of his duties following a string of disappointing performances, including defeats to Austria national football team and Germany national football team. The decision was finalized after a late-night meeting in Stuttgart, signaling a decisive shift in the technical direction of the national team.
With pressure mounting to restore the team’s competitive edge, the FA has already commenced a detailed review of candidates, considering both local and international coaches. Okraku emphasized that while the volume of applications is significant, the federation’s priority remains firmly on securing a candidate with the right blend of quality, experience, and alignment with Ghana’s long-term football vision.
“This is not just about numbers,” he stressed. “We are focused on finding the right person to lead the team forward.”
Time, however, is of the essence. Okraku disclosed that the FA expects to appoint a new head coach within the next one to two weeks, indicating an accelerated process as the Black Stars prepare for a demanding schedule.
“We will have a new coach in a week or two,” he confirmed in an interview with TV3.
The urgency is driven by a series of crucial upcoming fixtures, including high-profile friendlies against Mexico national football team and Wales national football team in May. These matches will offer the incoming coach limited time to evaluate the squad, implement tactical ideas, and begin rebuilding cohesion within the team.
Beyond the immediate horizon, attention is firmly fixed on the FIFA World Cup 2026, where Ghana face a formidable group featuring Panama national football team, Croatia national football team, and England national football team. The strength of the opposition has intensified the need for a technically astute and experienced manager capable of navigating the challenges ahead.
Amid rising expectations from fans and stakeholders, the Ghana Football Association has pledged a transparent and thorough recruitment process—one that aims to restore belief and guide the Black Stars back to their competitive best on the global stage.
As anticipation builds, the decision now rests on selecting the right leader from a crowded and highly competitive field—one who can reignite Ghana’s footballing pride and deliver results when it matters most.
