Mabizela backs Orlando Pirates to retain Betway Premiership crown

Orlando Pirates have been tipped to successfully defend their Betway Premiership title by former captain Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela, who believes the club’s transfer business has left them well equipped for another championship push.

The Buccaneers begin their title defence at home to top-flight newcomers Milford at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, with kick-off at 15:00.

Mabizela, who lifted silverware with Pirates during his playing days, says the quality and depth added in the off-season means expectations at the club should be high.

“It’s early to say, but yes, we are still going to defend the league again this coming season,” said the ex-defender.

New signings bolster Pirates squad

Pirates have been active in the market ahead of the new campaign, reinforcing Jose Riveiro’s squad with several additions, including Neo Rapoo, Gamphani Lungu, Sebastian Pedersen and Mthetheli Mthiyane, among others.

Mabizela believes those reinforcements give the champions enough cover across the pitch to cope with the demands of another title race.

The signing of Norway striker Pedersen is regarded as one of the headline arrivals. The 27-year-old has joined on a two-year contract, with the club holding an option to extend the deal.

Pedersen arrives in South Africa on the back of an impressive scoring record for Sogndal, where he has registered 51 goals in his last 117 appearances, including eight in 15 matches so far this season.

Pedersen relishing ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ move

Speaking to his former club Sogndal as his transfer was confirmed, Pedersen described the move to Orlando Pirates as too big an opportunity to turn down.

“This feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is such a huge club that I couldn’t pass up the chance when it arose,” he said.

“At first, I was a bit sceptical, but the more I’ve learned about the club and life in South Africa, the more excited I’ve become. I am very grateful that Sogndal reached an agreement with Orlando Pirates.”

The forward is expected to add competition in attack as Pirates attempt to balance their league defence with other domestic and continental commitments during the season.

Mabizela urges Mbokazi to stay patient at Chicago Fire

Away from Pirates’ preparations, Mabizela has also offered career advice to another rising South African defender, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who is currently on the books of Chicago Fire.

Mbokazi, 20, was one of the standout performers for Bafana Bafana during their historic Fifa World Cup campaign, in which South Africa progressed to the last 32 of the tournament for the first time.

Despite his growing reputation, Mabizela believes Mbokazi should resist the temptation to move too quickly and instead continue his development in Major League Soccer.

“I think where he is, he is okay because he is still young and has a lot to learn about international football. Fortunately, he is doing well. I would not rush him to go somewhere else and sit on the bench,” he said.

“If he decides [to leave], he must make sure wherever he goes, he must play and not sit on the bench.”

With Pirates set to raise the curtain on the new Betway Premiership season this weekend and Mbokazi’s progress being closely watched, Mabizela’s views underline both the high expectations on the champions and the careful career management needed for South Africa’s emerging talent.
