Lyon submit offer for Algeria midfielder Nabil Bentaleb
Olympique Lyonnais have stepped up their pursuit of Algeria international Nabil Bentaleb by submitting a formal offer for the free-agent midfielder following the expiry of his contract with Lille.
The Ligue 1 club are looking to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season and are reportedly hoping to capitalise on the opportunity to sign an experienced player without paying a transfer fee.
According to reports in France, Lyon have already presented a concrete proposal to the 31-year-old as they seek to secure one of the most sought-after free agents on the market.
The move reflects the club’s determination to add experience and leadership to its squad as preparations continue for the upcoming campaign.
A key factor behind Lyon’s interest is believed to be head coach Paulo Fonseca, who previously worked with Bentaleb during their time together at Lille.
The Portuguese manager is understood to be a strong admirer of the midfielder and has reportedly approved the move.
Fonseca is said to value Bentaleb’s ability to dictate the tempo of matches, recover possession and provide composure and character in midfield.
Those qualities have made the Algerian an attractive option as Lyon continue shaping their squad.
Should the transfer be completed, Bentaleb would join a midfield group that already includes Corentin Tolisso, Tyler Morton, Orel Mangala and Tanner Tessmann.
Despite the existing competition for places, Lyon believe the Algerian international can bring additional quality and experience to the squad.
Bentaleb now faces an important decision regarding the next stage of his career after representing Algeria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although Lyon have made their intentions clear with a formal offer, they are not the only club interested in securing his signature.
Lille are also attempting to retain the midfielder and have reportedly proposed a new contract in the hope of extending his stay.
The French club regard Bentaleb as an important member of the squad and are eager to keep him despite the expiry of his previous agreement.
However, Lyon may hold a significant advantage through Fonseca’s presence.
The pair built a strong working relationship during their time together at Lille, and that familiarity could play an important role in the player’s final decision.
Reports have also linked other clubs with the Algeria international, but Lyon’s proposal is currently considered the most concrete alternative to remaining at Lille.
At 31, Bentaleb is approaching another major moment in his career.
He must now decide whether to continue with Lille or accept a fresh challenge at one of Ligue 1’s biggest clubs.
For now, discussions remain ongoing, with Lyon hoping their offer and the opportunity to reunite with Fonseca will prove enough to convince the experienced midfielder to make the move.
