Senegal defender Moussa Niakhaté wins February Player of the Month Award at Lyon
Senegalese defender Moussa Niakhaté has been named Lyon’s Player of the Month for February after a series of commanding performances that helped stabilize the club’s defense.
The central defender played four matches in February without conceding a goal, recovering 19 balls and winning 16 of 19 aerial duels, showcasing his leadership at the heart of Lyon’s backline.
His contributions were pivotal as the team achieved four consecutive victories across all competitions before a defeat to RC Strasbourg Alsace ended their winning streak.
Niakhaté’s strong form follows his Africa Cup of Nations triumph with Senegal, further cementing his reputation as a reliable and influential defender.
Lyon supporters recognised his impact, with 1,626 fans participating in the vote. Niakhaté received 40% of the votes (663), ahead of goalkeeper Dominik Greif (32%, 532 votes) and midfielder Noah Nartey (28%, 474 votes).
“Niakhaté has been a pillar of our defense this month,” said one fan. “His consistency and leadership have given the team the solidity we needed.”
The 27-year-old has become a key figure in Lyon’s resurgence in Ligue 1, providing the defensive stability that had been missing earlier in the season.
His performances not only reflect his technical ability but also his growing influence in guiding younger teammates and organising the backline.
With his continued presence at the heart of defence, Lyon hopes to build on February’s strong performances as they aim for a higher finish in Ligue 1 and maintain competitiveness in domestic and continental competitions.
Niakhaté’s Player of the Month award highlights his importance both to the team and to the fans who recognise his efforts on the pitch.
