Rachid Ghezzal once again showcased his talent for Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday, opening the scoring in their 5-1 win over Guingamp. The Algerian winger, who had seen limited playing time under former coach Fournier, has become a pivotal figure in Bruno Génésio’s squad, and he is clearly enjoying his role.
Speaking after the match in the mixed zone, Ghezzal reflected on his recent performances and his growing influence. “I wanted to improve on this need for statistics, to be more decisive for the team. Tonight I was lucky enough to be involved in all the goals, so it’s good for me and the whole team. It’s always better to be decisive than not,” he said.
Ghezzal also discussed his comfort playing as a winger in Lyon’s system. “I don’t surprise myself in this position, because I know that practically all the big teams play with wingers who are on the wrong foot. I don’t surprise myself, on the contrary I’m fully developing.” He added that a difficult period earlier in the season had helped him mentally, allowing him to enjoy his current form even more: “I had a down period, it did me good mentally, so today I’m enjoying it.”
With his increasing influence on the pitch, Ghezzal is not only delivering for Lyon in terms of goals and assists but also providing a creative spark that has strengthened Génésio’s attacking options. His resurgence highlights his technical ability, vision, and adaptability on the wing, making him a key asset as Lyon looks to consolidate their position in Ligue 1.
