Yassine Benzia Determined to Fight for Place at Lyon Amid Transfer Interest
Despite being linked with a move away from Olympique Lyonnais this summer, Yassine Benzia has opted to stay and fight for a place in the squad as the new Ligue 1 season approaches.
The Franco-Algerian forward endured a challenging campaign last season, struggling to break into manager Hubert Fournier’s preferred starting eleven. With established attackers like Alexandre Lacazette, Nabil Fékir, Clinton Njié, and Mohamed Yattara ahead of him in the pecking order, Benzia found opportunities limited.
This season, competition in Lyon’s attacking ranks has grown even fiercer with the arrival of Claudio Beauvue from Guingamp—another blow to Benzia’s hopes of securing regular playing time.
Nevertheless, the 20-year-old has decided to stay and prove himself at his boyhood club. While Ligue 1 sides Nice and Montpellier have shown interest in signing the young striker, they may be forced to look elsewhere as Benzia remains focused on earning a place in Fournier’s starting XI during the early weeks of the campaign.
For the OL academy graduate, the coming weeks will be critical. Should he fail to make a breakthrough, the door may reopen for a late transfer—but for now, Benzia’s message is clear: he’s not giving up on Lyon just yet.
