Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Gueïda Fofana may be forced to sit out the entire 2014–2015 season following ankle surgery performed in Porto by a Dutch specialist.
Local radio station Radio Scoop delivered a sobering update on Wednesday, reporting a grim outlook that suggests Fofana could miss the entirety of the campaign. The 23-year-old French midfielder has struggled with recurring ankle issues in recent seasons, and this latest procedure was seen as a crucial intervention.
At a press conference, Lyon head coach Hubert Fournier refrained from confirming the worst-case scenario but acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Fofana’s recovery timeline. “I’m waiting for the surgical report with the medical staff to provide further information,” Fournier said. “From what I’ve heard, the operation went well. Now we’re waiting for the surgeon who performed the procedure to give us a timeline that we can use as a reference for Gueïda’s return.”
Fofana, who has been considered one of Lyon’s brightest midfield prospects, has seen his development repeatedly hampered by injury. If sidelined for the full season, it would be a significant blow not only to the player but also to Lyon, who are counting on their young core as they aim to challenge domestically and in Europe.
The club is expected to issue a more detailed update in the coming days once the post-operative assessments are completed. Until then, both fans and staff will remain cautiously hopeful that the prognosis may improve.
