Lyon and Rennes target European places in key Ligue 1 meeting

Olympique Lyonnais host Stade Rennais at Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday evening in the fifth round of the 2026-27 Ligue 1 season, with both sides aiming to strengthen their claims for European football.

Lyon remain unbeaten after four league matches but sit fifth following a goalless draw with Paris FC at Stade Jean Bouin. Rennes are third on 10 points, level with AS Monaco and LOSC Lille, after beating Olympique de Marseille 1-0 in their previous league fixture.

Paulo Fonseca’s side collected seven points from their opening three games, including impressive wins against Toulouse and AJ Auxerre. However, the stalemate against Liam Rosenior’s Paris FC means they missed the opportunity to move above AS Monaco at the top of the table.

Lyon also began their Europa League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Anderlecht at Lotto Park on Wednesday. That followed their 3-2 aggregate defeat by Fenerbahce in the Champions League qualifying play-off, which prevented them from reaching the competition’s main phase.

The hosts will be keen to respond before a demanding period that includes meetings with RC Lens and Paris Saint-Germain after the international break. They have beaten Rennes at home in each of the past two seasons, including a 4-2 win in May that helped them finish fourth, one point ahead of the same opponents and qualify for the Champions League preliminary rounds for the first time in five years.

Rennes improved significantly last season after finishing 12th in 2024-25, their worst position for more than a decade. Their sixth-place finish secured a return to European competition for the first time in three years.

Franck Haise’s team have lost only to Paris Saint-Germain this term. They drew 1-1 with Sturm Graz in Austria in their opening Europa League game despite recording 23 shots and 1.99 expected goals at Merkur-Arena, leaving them unbeaten in all competitions.

Rennes have scored eight goals in four league matches, but defensive improvement is needed. They have conceded 19 times across their past nine meetings with Lyon. Upcoming fixtures against Paris FC, Juventus and league leaders Lille will test their ability to compete domestically and in Europe.

Julien Duranville has returned to the Lyon squad after missing four matches with muscular fatigue, although he was an unused substitute against Anderlecht. Abner Vinicius is unlikely to feature after missing that game with an unspecified injury, so Nicolas Tagliafico could start. Keito Nakamura, who scored the decisive goal on his first start on Wednesday, is also in contention.

For Rennes, Anthony Rouault has replaced Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal in the past two matches. Djaoui Cisse is short of match fitness while recovering from a groin injury and is expected to miss out. Esteban Lepaul, with three goals in four league appearances, is the visitors’ main attacking threat.

The three suggested bets are both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 1.63, Esteban Lepaul to score or assist at 2.05, and Keito Nakamura to have a decisive contribution at 2.05.
