Lyle Lakay: South African left-back linked with Hope FC move after Siwelele exit

South African defender Lyle Lakay, currently without a club after leaving Siwelele FC, is being linked with a move to Hope FC as the 34-year-old weighs up his next step in the Betway Premiership.

Lakay became a free agent on 1 July 2026 following the end of his spell at Siwelele, opening the door for domestic suitors to move for the experienced left-back. Hope FC are understood to be exploring a deal for the Cape Town-born player, whose market valuation stands at around €200,000.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star brings extensive top-flight experience, having made more than 300 Betway Premiership appearances over the course of his career. He has also been a regular presence in continental competition, featuring in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup during his time at the summit of South African football.

Lakay enjoyed a highly successful spell at Sundowns, where he collected multiple league titles, including the 2022–23 championship, and added domestic cup honours to his record. That period established him as one of the most decorated left-sided defenders of his generation in the local game.

Subsequent moves to SuperSport United and then Siwelele kept him in the Premiership spotlight, with his set-piece delivery and experience in high-pressure fixtures regarded as key assets. Interest from Hope FC comes as they look to add proven quality and leadership to their defensive options ahead of the new campaign.

For now, Lakay remains unattached and free to negotiate, with talks over a potential switch to Hope FC yet to progress to an advanced stage.
