Luke Baartman targets more goals after opening Kaizer Chiefs account

Luke Baartman says he is determined to build on his first goal for Kaizer Chiefs after making an encouraging start to the season with the Glamour Boys.

The 20-year-old has played in all three of Kaizer Chiefs’ Betway Premiership matches this campaign, scoring in last week’s 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United.

That goal opened Baartman’s senior account for the club and followed an impressive individual performance in the opening match of the season. The former Cape Town Spurs academy player was named Man of the Match after helping Kaizer Chiefs to a 3-1 win over Kruger United.

Baartman has credited the club’s technical team for trusting him from the beginning of the campaign and giving him the opportunity to establish himself in the side.

“It has been a good start to the season. It’s always great to win early on to bolster the momentum of the team,” he said.

The forward said his goal against Sekhukhune United was particularly significant, while also acknowledging the contribution of his team-mates in helping him reach the milestone.

“I just want to thank the coach and his technical team for giving me the opportunity to start the game and believing in me.

“Scoring the goal was a very proud moment for me. I am grateful to my teammates for helping me to get my first goal and I wish to score many more.

The result against Sekhukhune United gave Kaizer Chiefs another positive result early in the Betway Premiership season, while Baartman’s involvement in each of the club’s first three fixtures has strengthened his role within the team.

His performances have also been supported by the strong backing of the Kaizer Chiefs fanbase, with the club’s supporters turning out in large numbers for the team.

“Our supporters are amazing, always turning out in big numbers and being there for us. It is comforting to know they have our backs and we try to reciprocate by giving our best every time we step onto the field.”

Baartman’s immediate aim is to continue contributing as Kaizer Chiefs look to maintain their early momentum. His first goal has provided a personal landmark, but he has made clear that he wants it to be the beginning of a more productive goalscoring run.

The youngster’s early-season progress comes after he emerged from the Cape Town Spurs academy and was given his opportunity by the Kaizer Chiefs technical team. He has responded with a Man of the Match display, three consecutive appearances and a goal in the victory over Sekhukhune United.
