However, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), led by President Wilmar Valdez, immediately announced they will appeal the decision. They argue the punishment is exaggerated and lack clear evidence to justify it. They also stressed Uruguay isn’t seeking special treatment but feels the sanction is disproportionate compared to other aggressive fouls in football.
Important detail: The appeal is not suspensive, meaning Suarez won’t be able to play in the upcoming round of 16 match against Colombia unless FIFA overturns the decision before then — and that seems unlikely given the short timeframe.
This all means Uruguay faces the knockout rounds without their star striker, which is a huge blow.
