Luis Enrique tells PSG they must reach ‘highest level’ to beat Villarreal

Luis Enrique says Paris Saint-Germain must produce their best performance of the season if they are to overcome Villarreal in Tuesday’s Champions League meeting at La Ceramica.

The PSG manager expects a demanding contest against a Villarreal side he considers capable of causing problems through their quality, organisation and attacking threat, despite PSG’s status as European champions.

“If we are not at our highest level, we will not win,” Luis Enrique said at his pre-match press conference.

He rejected the suggestion that being regarded as favourites would provide Paris Saint-Germain with any advantage, saying his players must show the correct mentality from the start.

“They have a good squad with a very good manager. We must show from the opening minute that we are ready and determined to win the match,” he added.

Villarreal’s pressing game and ability to retain possession are particular concerns for Luis Enrique. He believes PSG will need to remain focused and disciplined if they are to cope with the hosts’ approach.

“It will be tough to bypass their press. I relish these kinds of challenges, so we must stay alert across the board to secure a positive result,” he said.

The Spanish coach also insisted that the team’s standards and preparations do not change according to the competition or the players selected for a match.

“These are vital points. Our goal is to perform well in every single fixture. Regardless of the competition or who is playing, we strive to improve,” he explained.

Luis Enrique praised Villarreal head coach Inigo Perez, whom he knows from his time working in Spanish football.

He described Perez as an intelligent young manager whose footballing principles are clear, and said he expects his colleague to have a successful future in the game.

“He is a sharp, young coach with a style of play I admire. When a team radiates positive energy, there is a great manager behind it,” Luis Enrique said.

Villarreal have had to adapt to the demands of competing in both domestic and European football, but Luis Enrique believes the club’s development under Perez is progressing well.

“I have no doubt that Inigo will enjoy very successful years here,” he concluded.
