Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion, beating RB Leipzig 6-0 at the Allianz Arena as Luis Diaz scored a hat-trick. Borussia Dortmund were held to a second consecutive draw after a goalless stalemate at Union Berlin.
Bayern took control from the outset and went ahead in the 12th minute. Diaz was played through by Joshua Kimmich before finishing neatly past Maarten Vandevoordt.
The Leipzig goalkeeper then saved from Dayot Upamecano, but Bayern doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when Diaz set up Alexander Pavlovic.
Michael Olise and Ismael Saibari continued to threaten as the hosts maintained the pressure. Olise made it 3-0 in the 34th minute with a precise left-footed finish, leaving Bayern in a commanding position at half-time.
Leipzig manager Martin Demichelis made two changes during the interval, but his side conceded again within two minutes of the restart. Diaz completed his hat-trick with a curling effort into the far corner.
Nathaniel Brown then supplied Harry Kane with a simple tap-in for Bayern’s fifth goal. Vandevoordt prevented the scoreline becoming even heavier by saving from Serge Gnabry, Upamecano and Olise, while Olise also struck the woodwork late on.
Diaz added his third in the 69th minute with another curled finish, although Leipzig denied Bayern a clean sheet when Andrija Maksimovic scored his first goal of the season in the first minute of added time.
“The first 60 minutes were a very good performance. In the first half in particular, we could’ve scored even more goals,” Kimmich said.
“We then started the second half very well. The last 30 minutes were okay, but the first 60 were on another level. I’m really happy for Lucho [Diaz]. He really earned it.”
Kimmich added: “He obviously missed a few chances at the start of the season, but he produced such amazing numbers for us last season. He had an excellent game today and was definitely the man tonight. I’m so happy for him.”
The victory moved defending champions Bayern temporarily back to the top of the Bundesliga, ahead of Freiburg’s visit to Bayer Leverkusen.
Dortmund held again
Dortmund dominated possession and applied sustained pressure in a closely contested first half at An der alten Forsterei, but failed to create a clear opening. Union Berlin came closest before the interval when Gregor Kobel dealt with Kastriot Imeri’s free-kick.
Maxi Beier narrowly missed the target in the 56th minute after being found by Julian Ryerson. Union then threatened on the counter-attack, but Tim Skarke failed to take advantage of an error by Dortmund defender Kouakou Gadou.
Serhou Guirassy went close with two headers, yet Dortmund could not find a winner.
“We didn’t do enough to create more problems for our opponents,” Kobel said. “Ultimately, you’re left with a scoreless draw, which is frustrating and painful.”
Elsewhere, Elversberg ended a three-match winless league run by beating Augsburg 4-3. Lukas Petkov, Lasse Gunther and Maximilian Rohr put the hosts 3-0 ahead before Fabian Rieder and Michael Gregoritsch scored penalties for Augsburg. Frederik Schmahl restored Elversberg’s two-goal lead, while Mert Komur scored Augsburg’s third.
Mainz beat Schalke 1-0 at VELTINS-Arena through a low strike from Philip Tietz. Hamburg defeated VfB Stuttgart 1-0, with Miro Muheim scoring in the 88th minute, while Werder Bremen drew 2-2 with Paderborn after a Nicolas Fullkrug brace.
