Luis de la Fuente backs Lamine Yamal as Spain’s next World Cup star

Luis de la Fuente has heaped praise on Lamine Yamal, branding the Barcelona teenager a generational talent as Spain look ahead to the 2026 World Cup.

Yamal, who made his Spain debut on 8 September 2023 against Georgia, has quickly become one of the national team’s most exciting attacking options.

“Lamine is an example of a well-rounded, educated, respectful young man with immense talent,” the Spain boss said, underlining both his character and ability. “You can immediately see those kinds of footballers who are touched by that magic touch that says, ‘You’re going to be special.’”

De la Fuente also admitted the Spanish federation moved decisively to secure Yamal’s international future amid outside interest. “That is why the RFEF did everything necessary to secure his loyalty and ensure he was convinced that playing for the Spanish national team was the best option.”

Despite previous on-pitch clashes between Yamal and Dani Carvajal in El Clasico, the coach insisted harmony reigns in the dressing room. “I have no doubt that when they see each other, they’ll be eager to give each other a hug,” he said, reflecting confidence in Spain’s unity before the World Cup.
