Luca Zidane close to Leganes move after difficult Algeria World Cup

Luca Zidane is close to leaving Granada for fellow Spanish second-tier club Leganes, just weeks after a difficult 2026 World Cup campaign with Algeria.

An agreement has reportedly been reached between Granada, Leganes and the 28-year-old goalkeeper, with only Zidane’s signature needed before the transfer can be completed, according to AS and Marca.

The move is expected to involve a relatively small transfer fee, with additional payments linked to the goalkeeper’s performances. Zidane remains under contract with Granada until 2027, but is set to continue his career in Liga 2 and remain in Spain, the country where he grew up and has played throughout his professional career.

Leganes, based in the Madrid suburbs, have been looking to reshape their goalkeeping department, with the departure of current first-choice goalkeeper Juan Soriano expected.

Zidane’s campaign with Granada was mixed. He started 27 matches and conceded 33 goals, but his season was disrupted by competition for his place and injury.

He lost his position at the beginning of the campaign before regaining it later on. His progress was then interrupted towards the end of the season by a fitness problem.

His future at Granada had already appeared uncertain. The Andalusian club had begun preparing for increased competition in goal with the arrival of Raul Lizoain, an experienced goalkeeper who has previously played for Las Palmas.

Should the transfer go through, Zidane would join a Leganes squad featuring Morocco international Yassine Kechta, Tunisia international Ismael Gharbi, Guinea international Amadou Diawara and Cameroon international Patrick Soko.

The move will also be watched closely by Algeria, where the goalkeeping position remains a major concern.

Zidane faced heavy criticism during the 2026 World Cup, particularly after conceding three goals against Argentina in Algeria’s opening match. His replacement, Oussama Benbot, did not provide greater reassurance when he was selected against Austria.

As a result, the goalkeeper position remains one of the principal challenges facing Algeria’s national team, if not the most pressing one.

There is also likely to be a change in the national-team set-up. Vladimir Petkovic has left his position as Algeria manager and a new head coach is expected to arrive, possibly from Spain. That change could lead to a fresh assessment of the squad and reopen the competition for the number-one shirt.

For Zidane, a move to Leganes would offer the chance to find greater stability after an uneven period at Granada. It would also give the son of Zinedine Zidane an opportunity to rebuild his reputation and demonstrate that he can remain a credible option for Algeria.

The transfer would allow him to stay in the Spanish second tier, where he has developed his entire professional career, while providing Leganes with a goalkeeper capable of competing for the starting position following the expected departure of Soriano.
