Luca Zidane makes costly error as Leganes lose to Castellon

Luca Zidane endured a difficult night for Leganes after a costly mistake helped Castellon secure a 2-0 victory in the Spanish second division.

The Algerian goalkeeper, who is suspended for Algeria’s next two matches, returned to club action for Leganes as they hosted Castellon on the seventh matchday of Liga 2.

Zidane’s biggest mistake came in the 24th minute when he moved well outside his penalty area to deal with a clearance from the opposing goalkeeper.

The goalkeeper attempted to control the ball but failed to keep possession under pressure. His touch allowed Castellon forward Israel Suero to take advantage of the situation.

Suero collected the ball, dribbled past Zidane and produced an excellent finish from around 30 metres. The striker sent the ball over the stranded goalkeeper and into the net while Zidane was positioned wide on the left side of the pitch.

It was a costly error for the Leganes goalkeeper and gave Castellon the lead.

Zidane had an opportunity to respond soon afterwards and made a good save with his fists to prevent another effort from finding the net.

However, Castellon eventually doubled their advantage shortly after the restart.

Jakobsen found the net in the 47th minute with a cross shot that Zidane was unable to keep out. The goalkeeper went down slightly late and could not quite reach the ball with his arm despite it passing close to him.

The second goal left Leganes facing a two goal deficit and they were unable to find a way back into the match.

The defeat was a disappointing result for Leganes, who had gone into the fixture after an impressive 3-2 victory against Granada the previous week.

Their latest performance ended that positive result with a 2-0 home defeat against Castellon.

For Zidane, the match provided an opportunity to gain more club minutes while he remains unavailable for Algeria because of his two match suspension.

Instead, the evening ended with the goalkeeper at the centre of a difficult moment after his error contributed directly to Castellon’s opening goal.

The result means Leganes leave the seventh matchday without points from the fixture, while Castellon leave with a clean sheet and a two goal victory.

Zidane will now look to put the mistake behind him as Leganes continue their Liga 2 campaign.
