Van Gaal Bows Out with Bronze as Dutch Humble Brazil Again
Louis van Gaal’s tenure with the Netherlands ended on a high note as the Oranje dismantled a demoralized Brazil 3–0 to secure third place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It was a commanding performance from a side that had narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a penalty shootout defeat to Argentina.
With goals from Robin van Persie (2nd minute, penalty), Daley Blind (16th minute), and Georginio Wijnaldum (89th minute), the Dutch ended their campaign with a flourish — and with an emphatic statement against the tournament hosts still reeling from their 7–1 humiliation by Germany in the semi-finals.
“We absolutely wanted to finish in third place, and we achieved that despite Brazil’s resistance,” said Van Gaal.
“We scored fifteen goals in seven matches. We can consider our World Cup a great success. I’m proud of my players and my staff.”
Van Gaal, who now turns his attention to his new role at Manchester United, also took a moment to praise the World Cup hosts.
“The extraordinarily friendly nature of the Brazilians… the people were very kind to my players everywhere. The organization was excellent — FIFA and the committee must be congratulated.”
The Dutch leave Brazil unbeaten in regular time, having defeated reigning champions Spain 5–1 in the group stage and finished with a tournament-best goal tally. Though they fell short of the title, Van Gaal’s tactical acumen and team unity earned admiration around the globe.
As the World Cup finale looms — a heavyweight showdown between Germany and Argentina — the world awaits to see who will lift football’s most coveted trophy.
