Vincent Aboubakar, currently one of the top scorers in Ligue 1 playing for Lorient, shared insights into his childhood and journey to becoming a professional footballer in an interview with his club’s official magazine.
Life wasn’t easy for Aboubakar in Cameroon, where he grew up as the sixth child in a family of seven. His mother was a trader who sold fish, and he spent a significant amount of time with friends, going to school during the day and attending training afterward.
Aboubakar started playing football at a young age, initially joining a neighborhood club near his house. At the age of twelve, he stood out in the TOP Cup competition, earning recognition as the best player. This achievement led him to join the football school organized by the Brasseries du Cameroun training center.
Despite playing football for fun initially, Aboubakar’s perspective changed during his time with Coton Sport de Garoua. He only started thinking about becoming a professional footballer around the age of 18, particularly after representing Cameroon in the World Cup.
His journey highlights the impact of his experiences, from local neighborhood play to international competitions, in shaping his awareness of the significance of football in his life.
