Lorch to Kaizer Chiefs move unlikely as Al Ittihad Tripoli future remains in place

Thembinkosi Lorch is unlikely to join Kaizer Chiefs in the immediate future, with the experienced attacker expected to return to Libya and continue preparations for the new season with Al Ittihad Tripoli.

Lorch’s name has again been linked with a move to Naturena in recent weeks, reviving speculation that the former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns player could return to the PSL. However, indications are that there is currently little to suggest a deal with Chiefs is close.

The 33-year-old joined Al Ittihad Tripoli in January after leaving Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca. Reports at the time said he had agreed a one-and-a-half-year contract with the Libyan club, although his current agreement is understood to run until the end of 2027.

That contractual commitment is one of the main factors that could complicate any attempt by Chiefs to sign him.

Lorch is understood to be open to the possibility of playing for Kaizer Chiefs if an opportunity arises. That willingness, however, should not be interpreted as evidence that he is actively seeking a return to South Africa.

For now, the expectation is that his immediate future remains with Al Ittihad Tripoli. The club invested heavily to secure his services earlier this year, reportedly paying Wydad Casablanca a substantial transfer fee and offering the player a lucrative contract.

With Al Ittihad Tripoli preparing for the upcoming campaign, Lorch is expected to report for pre-season and rejoin his team-mates as the club continues its preparations.

Any attempt by Chiefs to turn their reported interest into a formal pursuit could therefore require negotiations with the Libyan side. It remains uncertain whether Amakhosi would be prepared to enter those discussions, particularly given Lorch’s long-term contractual position.

Lorch previously made his name in South Africa with Orlando Pirates before later featuring for Mamelodi Sundowns. His performances for both clubs helped establish him as one of the country’s most recognisable attacking players, and his potential return to the PSL has consequently attracted renewed attention.

However, the latest indications point away from an immediate comeback. Unless the situation changes significantly, Lorch is expected to remain in Libya rather than move to Chiefs.

The speculation comes as Kaizer Chiefs continue to assess their squad and possible recruitment options, but there is no current indication that a deal for Lorch has advanced beyond interest and discussion.

For the moment, the attacker remains contracted to Al Ittihad Tripoli, where he is expected to continue his career and prepare for the new season.
