Liverpool’s Ronald Araujo loan is a high-reward, high-risk move, says Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool’s decision to bring in Ronald Araujo on loan is both understandable and concerning, with the Uruguay defender offering valuable versatility but carrying significant questions over his consistency and discipline.

The Liverpool great believes the deal has a clear sporting and financial rationale, particularly because the club need to strengthen a defence that has suffered several setbacks. However, he remains unconvinced that Araujo represents the long-term solution Liverpool should have pursued.

“Look, it’s a mixture of the best and the worst, isn’t it?” Carragher said, according to Spanish newspaper Sport.

Liverpool’s defensive options have been weakened by the departure of Ibrahima Konate and fitness problems affecting the back line. Those issues have left Virgil van Dijk as the only fully available defender with extensive experience, making Araujo’s arrival a response to an obvious need.

Carragher was clear that he does not doubt the Uruguay international’s physical qualities or his ability to contribute in more than one position.

“Araujo is a physical beast, aggressive, and he can play at centre-back or right-back. He also has experience at the highest level. He has been Barcelona’s captain and has played in big matches,” said the former England defender.

The structure of the move is also viewed positively by Carragher. A loan would allow Liverpool to assess whether Araujo can adapt to the pace of the Premier League and the demands of working under Iraola before making a final decision on a permanent transfer.

“The loan is low risk. You test him for a year, see if he adapts to Iraola, and if he does well, you buy him. That part makes sense. It fills a gap without blowing the budget,” Carragher said.

His concerns begin when assessing Araujo’s performances rather than his attributes. Carragher believes the defender’s principal weaknesses are tactical and mental, rather than physical.

“Enthusiasm is great, he throws himself into tackles, but defending at this level is about decision-making, concentration and reading the game,” he said.

According to Carragher, Araujo has repeatedly shown shortcomings in those areas during his more recent seasons with Barcelona. He warned that the defender’s lapses could be punished severely in England.

“Quite often against elite teams he loses concentration, gives away silly penalties or gets sent off. The Premier League is unforgiving; any lapse and you will be punished,” he said.

Carragher also questioned Araujo’s recent level of performance, highlighting concerns about his reliability and discipline.

“Araujo has suffered from problems with consistency and discipline, and his level has dropped,” he added.

The former Liverpool defender believes the club might have been better served by signing a more established centre-back, rather than taking a chance on a player who had become a substitute for 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi at Barcelona.

“Liverpool should have signed a more experienced defender instead of choosing a player who was always behind 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi,” Carragher said.

He returned to that point by suggesting the loan could be viewed as a reaction to Araujo’s reduced status at Barcelona, rather than the arrival of a proven marquee signing.

“Arriving here on loan after being told he wasn’t a regular at Barcelona… it feels more like a reaction than a deal for a big star,” he said.

Carragher would have preferred Liverpool to find a more settled long-term answer, although he accepts Araujo must first be judged in competitive action.

“I would have preferred a permanent solution that fitted the system for the long term, but let’s see him play first. I’m just not excited yet,” he said.
