Liverpool’s pre-season warning as Leeds overturn two-goal deficit

Andoni Iraola suffered a major setback as Liverpool surrendered a two-goal lead before losing 4-2 to Leeds United in a remarkable second-half comeback led by a Dominic Calvert-Lewin double.

The result exposed Liverpool’s vulnerability when key players are absent. After several of their established stars left the pitch, the team lost its structure and collapsed, leaving Iraola standing on the touchline unable to halt the decline. The performance suggested Liverpool still require greater squad depth and consistency before the new season begins.

The friendly had initially appeared to be going exactly as Liverpool planned. They took the lead in the seventh minute through Luke Chambers, who headed the ball into the net after a cleverly worked set-piece routine.

Dominik Szoboszlai delivered the free-kick, which was flicked on with a backheel by Milos Kerkez. Chambers then finished the move with a header, a goal that highlighted Iraola’s apparent emphasis on making Liverpool more effective from dead-ball situations.

Liverpool continued to control much of the first half, with Florian Wirtz emerging as the outstanding player on the pitch. The Germany international maintained the impressive form he had shown during the club’s preparations, dictating the rhythm of the game and finding useful positions between the lines.

Wirtz’s movement created space for Jeremy Frimpong and Rio Ngumoha, allowing Liverpool to threaten Leeds from several areas. His influence was rewarded five minutes before half-time when he scored Liverpool’s second goal, converting a cross from a former Bayer Leverkusen team-mate.

Leeds had opportunities to respond before the interval, and Lukas Nmecha came close to reducing the deficit. However, Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili produced two excellent saves to preserve his side’s advantage.

Liverpool therefore went into the break with a 2-0 lead, seemingly in control of the contest. That dominance disappeared after half-time, however, as Leeds transformed the match and took advantage of Liverpool’s loss of cohesion.

Calvert-Lewin became the central figure in the turnaround, scoring twice as Leeds completed a dramatic 4-2 victory. Liverpool’s inability to maintain their level after changes were made provided the clearest warning for Iraola, whose side looked markedly less secure once key members of the team were no longer on the field.

The defeat was especially damaging because Liverpool had built a comfortable advantage through a disciplined first-half performance. Their set-piece execution, Wirtz’s creativity and Mamardashvili’s saves had all contributed to a strong opening 45 minutes, but those positives were overshadowed by the scale of the second-half collapse.

As analysed by Spanish newspaper AS, the meeting offered several notable moments, but its main conclusion was straightforward: Liverpool remain short of the depth and stability required to cope when their leading players are unavailable.
